On June 2, 2026, CJI Surya Kant administered the oath of office to five new Supreme Court judges — Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and V. Mohana (senior advocate). With these appointments, the total strength of the Supreme Court reached 37 judges, the highest ever. The sanctioned strength was recently increased from 34 to 38 (including CJI) via the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026. One vacancy still remains. Justice V. Mohana’s elevation is also significant as it strengthens women’s representation in the apex court.

Every Supreme Court judge appointment is made by the President of India under Article 124(2) of the Constitution. The Centre, on June 1, 2026, cleared all five names after the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended them on May 27. Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the President’s approval. Article 217 deals with High Court judges, Article 148 with the Comptroller and Auditor General, and Article 143 with the President’s power to seek SC’s opinion.

IIT Roorkee declared JEE Advanced 2026 results on June 1, 2026. Shubham Kumar from the IIT Delhi zone secured AIR 1 with an impressive score of 330 out of 360 marks. Kabeer Chhillar secured AIR 2 (329 marks) and Jatin Chahar secured AIR 3 (319 marks) — all three from the IIT Delhi zone, which dominated the top 3 positions. Arohi Deshpande (IIT Delhi zone) emerged as the top female candidate with CRL Rank 77 and 280 marks out of 360. A total of 56,880 candidates qualified out of 1,79,694 who appeared.

As per official IIT Roorkee data released along with JEE Advanced 2026 results on June 1, 56,880 candidates qualified the examination. Out of the total 1,87,389 registered candidates, 1,79,694 appeared in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Of the qualified candidates, 46,773 were male and 10,107 were female. JoSAA 2026 counselling process for IIT admissions commenced from June 2, 2026.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), along with BPCL and HPCL, hiked the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder by ₹42 in Delhi, making the new price ₹3,113.50 effective from June 1, 2026. In Kolkata the hike was sharper at ₹53.50, taking the price to ₹3,255.50. Prices of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders were also raised by ₹11. Importantly, domestic LPG cylinder (14.2 kg) prices remained unchanged. The hike is attributed to global supply chain disruptions from the West Asia crisis.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup and will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. This edition is historic as it features 48 teams for the first time, divided into 12 groups of four. The opening match is between Mexico and South Africa at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. The FIFA World Cup 2026 Trophy visited India as part of a Coca-Cola-sponsored global trophy tour recently.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia along with MoS Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani launched India Post’s guaranteed delivery services in 6 metro cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The 24 Speed Post ensures next-day (D+1) delivery and 48 Speed Post ensures D+2 delivery. Features include OTP-based secure delivery and end-to-end SMS tracking. The service will expand to more cities by September 2026, with nationwide coverage planned by 2027. Deliveries happen even on Sundays and holidays.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is the statutory body under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) responsible for investigating civil aviation accidents and incidents in India. The IndiaOne Air 9-seater Cessna Grand C208B aircraft crash-landed near Kansor, Rourkela in Sundargarh district of Odisha. The aircraft had taken off from Bhubaneswar and the crew declared a “Mayday” before making a forced landing. All 6 on board (4 passengers + 2 crew) survived. The probe follows DGCA Standard Operating Procedures.

Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC) is PM Narendra Modi’s flagship initiative where he interacts directly with students, teachers, and parents on exam stress and related issues. The 8th edition (PPC 2025) received the Guinness World Record for “Most people registered on a Citizen Engagement Platform in one month” with 3.53–3.56 crore registrations. PPC 2026 (9th edition) shattered this record by crossing 4.3 crore registrations. Registrations were open via the MyGov portal (innovateindia1.mygov.in) from December 1, 2025. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the milestone.

The Somnath Swabhiman Parv (January 8–11, 2026) commemorated 1,000 years since Mahmud of Ghazni’s first invasion of the Somnath Temple in January 1026 AD. PM Modi led the grand Shaurya Yatra at Prabhas Patan, Gujarat, as a ceremonial tribute to the warriors who defended the temple. The event also marked 75 years since the post-independence consecration of the temple in 1951, a effort led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi also participated.
